ValidiFI team at Booth 612, Lend360 2026 in Austin, Texas

Lend360 in Austin brought lenders, fintechs, and service providers together at a moment when the industry has plenty to talk about. Our team spent three days at Booth 612, and on Tuesday night we co-hosted Austin After Dark at Woody’s on West 6th with our friends at LendSuite Software, Leap Theory, IM Group Marketing, and Flex Payment Solutions. Between the booth and the late-night conversations, the same themes kept coming up.

Key takeaways from Lend360 2026

  • Lenders are balancing rising costs with stricter, more varied state oversight.
  • Lead quality now matters more than lead volume, which puts more weight on better data.
  • The economy has held up, but auto borrowers are showing strain.
  • Fraud remains a top concern heading into 2027.

Consumer lending trends in 2026: record volume, more scrutiny

Throughout 2026, consumer finance has been defined by record borrowing volumes, tighter regulatory scrutiny, and rising fraud, all inside a volatile economy. The lenders we spoke with were candid about how complicated operations have become as multi-state oversight and enforcement expand.

There’s no consensus on the fix. Some see automation as the answer, while others want a more closely monitored approach. Either way, these trends point to a resilient consumer and to priorities that are shifting as we head into the new year.

Rising costs and the push for better lead quality

Under stricter state regulations, lenders are still juggling rising operational costs while finding it harder to identify the right customers. While there is still a lead issue, we are discovering it is more of a data issue. By using the right tools that assess risk across more accounts with broader coverage and deeper, more accurate data, lenders get better results.

There’s still a lead issue, but we’re discovering it’s really a data issue.

Even so, the sector remains resilient, and the regulatory shifts underway are setting the strategic framework for Q4 2026 and early 2027.

The 2027 economic outlook and pressure on auto lending

These changes are landing in a complicated economy. Growth is solid and corporate earnings remain strong, but higher oil prices and elevated interest rates have kept volatility in play. The big question for the rest of the year is whether that strength holds as households and businesses keep adjusting to higher borrowing costs, inflation, and energy uncertainty.

So far, it has. Consumer spending is steady and unemployment remains low, which has supported growth even as the cost of capital climbs. But the pressure points are there, especially in auto lending. Longer loan terms, higher monthly payments and historically high interest costs all point to a consumer who is stretched.

Fraud keeps evolving

First-party fraud picked up in the second quarter of 2026 and hasn’t eased. Synthetic identity fraud remains a challenge too, because these applicants often look legitimate until they don’t. With ValidiFI, lenders can get earlier signals and better data to identify the viable customers.
